Ralf Heiber, Univ.Prof. Mag.



  • Ralf Heiber was born in Berlin and grew up in Toronto, Caracas, Brasilia and Barcelona
  • First piano studies under the French pianist Monique Duphil (student of Marguerite Long and Jean Doyen) and later with Maria Carbonel de Massiá while living in Barcelona and Helmut Hirschburger (student of Vladimir Horbowsky)
  • Professional training (performance and instrumental pedagogy) with Roland Keller, first at the Academy of Music in Lübeck and then at the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna
  • Diploma in instrumental pedagogy at the Academy of Music in Lübeck and performance diplomas with honours at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna
  • Vocal Accompaniment with Roman Ortner and Norman Shetler
  • University course in breath, vocal and movement techniquefor instrumentalists with Dr. Bernhard Riebl
  • Prize winner at the University Competition in Lübeck
  • Prize winner of the Austromechana University Competition in Vienna for piano music of the twentieth century
  • Accompanying prize at the Sixth International Brahms Art Song Competition in Hamburg
  • First prize at the International Schubert Art Song Competition in Vienna
  • Masterclasses with Claude Helffer, Jürgen Uhde, Ludwig Hoffmann, Karl Heinz Kämmerling, Erik Werba und Dalton Baldwin

Pedagogical Experience:

  • Until 2018: University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna – Prayner Konservatorium (Piano and Vocal Accompaniment)
  • 1998-2003: University of Music and the Performing Arts in Graz/Oberschützen
  • Since 1997: Head of a piano masterclass at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory
  • Until 2017: Head of the piano department at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory
  • Since 2018 professor for Vocal Accompaniment for Song and Oratorio at the Music and Arts University in Vienna
  • Lecturer in Spain, Italy and France(Erasmus Exchange Programme)
  • Additionally, he is in demand as an adjudicator for international competitions and regularly conducts masterclasses worldwide (Austria, Italy, France, Spain, China, Japan and Korea)
  • Many of his students have competed internationally and been awarded prizes for competitions in Hong Kong, Rome, Jaén, Concours international de piano Orléans, and first prize/Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris at the Olivier Messiaen Competition in Paris 2007 a.o.

Artistic Experience:

  • He regularly appears as a soloist and chamber musician (with Norman Shetler, among others) and is frequently sought after as an accompanist for renowned singers (including Barbara Hölzl and Georg Nigl)
  • Television and radio broadcasts in Austria, Germany, Italy and Spain. His recordings have been highly acclaimed by both the public and press
